They were used as national mascots and recruitment posters in World War 1 and 2 due to their popularity. Over time, they were called “America’s dog.”
Currently, pitbulls have grown largely to cover about 20% of the total population of dogs in the US.
Basically, “pit bulls” are an ill-defined type of dog, instead of a breed. In the early 1800s, the term originated in the British Isles during the inhumane and violent sport of “bull baiting”.
Pitbulls were derived from a breed of dogs which were used for activities known as ratting.
In ratting, rats were usually placed in a pit and these dogs were placed in there as well to capture or kill more rats than their opponent.

What are pit bulls actually called?
While there is no breed which is particularly known as a Pitbull or Pit Bull, the correct name for this kind of dog is the American Pitbull Terrier.

Thus a pit bull is any dog that resembles a medium-sized, short-haired dog that has some physical traits that are commonly found in the numerous bully-type (or bulldog-type) breeds.
On the contrary, the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is the only formal breed that has the term “pit bull” in its name.
Four dog breeds that are included in the category of modern pitbull-type are:

According to a recent comprehensive study on canine DNA, it has been estimated that about 98% of dogs with ancestry from any of the pitbull-type breeds are not even purebred.
This study also determined that about 62% of these dogs possess less than 50% DNA concentration from any pitbull-type ancestry which makes them basically mixed dogs breeds.
A dog that is labeled or visually identified as a “pit bull”, is now considered to be more likely a mixed breed dog by DNA or another dog breed entirely than dogs in the pitbull-type breeds.
What does the pit in Pit bull stand for?
The American pit bull terrier has many theories of their existence. Each of these theories will entertain you.
Firstly, they started out as Molossus, and were used in Greece as general purpose herding and working guard dogs.
Molossus was a loyal breed that moved around with humans as dogs of war. They entered Great Britain and changed their name to mastiff.
However, Rome confiscated the breed after their war with the native locals in Britain. For the next 400 years, this breed move around Europe, where they were bred with different dogs.
There is a conflicting theory that said that pit bulls started out in England in 1066 after the Norman Conquest.
English used pit bulls to rally their bulls. This earned them the name bullenbeissers, which means bull biter.
Within this period, a new betting sport was sanctioned. Hence, pit bulls were entered into a pit to enliven a bull and were wagered upon for their prowess.
Maybe, this was where the name originated from in England. Meanwhile, bullenbeisser’s descendants were bred with terriers.
This helped combine the strength of a mastiff with the smaller stature and intelligence of a terrier.
Also, it is believed British immigrants brought this mastiff-terrier mix to the United States.
When the mastiff-terrier came to America, they were restricted to breeding with smaller dogs.
This created a small statured, agile dog of roughly 25 to 30 pounds. They have strictly bred with the American bulldog and the result was the modern-day pit bull.
