For many new dog owners, the question of where their dog should sleep is usually a very common question.
I had a dilemma when I brought my dog home. I didn’t know where to leave it at night.
Since it was a puppy, I decided to leave it in our room but what my partner didn’t share the same view.
I had to find a better alternative for Jack beside the living room. After all, puppies are very small and cuddly and it is very normal to worry about their safety.
Where should my Pomeranian sleep at night? According to many Pom owners, there are a lot of merits attached to letting your Pom sleep beside you. Some of these include:
- Greater security for your dog
- Release of happy hormones for you and your dog
- Extra cuddles and bond time for you and your dog
Regardless, I want you to know that there are some disadvantages to having your dog sleep beside you. The risks include:
- Interrupted sleep
- Exchange of sickness between you and your dog
- Your dog may fall out of the bed and get hurt in the process
Before allowing your dog to sleep beside you, I have some important measures that you must follow:
Set up an area where your dog can be comfortable while he sleeps:
If your job keeps you away from home for most of the day, you can create a playpen or a gated-off area for your dog. Endeavor to place a very comfortable bed in that area where your dog can sleep.
During the day and at night, if your dog spends a lot of time in that spot, then it won’t be long until your dog gets used to sleeping in that environment.
Dogs may not be able to sleep in an unfamiliar environment where they go only during the night. This may keep your dog up and have him running back to your bedroom at the night.
As such, I make sure his daytime spot has easy access so he can come in and go out as he pleases.
- In addition, I make sure this spot is positioned away from doors and places where there are a lot of movements and disturbances.
Ensure there are no heat or draughty spots:
Make sure that the spot you have set out for your Pom is not cold or hot. Do not forget to check the spot from your Pom’s height and not yours as your dog is closer to the ground than you are.
Create a mood of calmness:
You can do this by reducing the volume of the TV or radio around the spot created for your dog. Also, reduce any kind of noise to the lowest volume possible and dim the lights in that area.
Keep his favorite toys in that spot:
If your dog has a favorite toy or blanket, you can keep it in that spot to keep him busy and relaxed.
Toilet break:
About half an hour before it’s time for your dog to go and sleep, take your Pom outside for a toilet break. As soon as you put your dog to bed, do not regard any form of noise that your dog makes unless you know he is very desperate to go outside again.
Although this may sound quite difficult, you must learn how to ignore it so that your dog can learn how to go back to sleep on his own.
Once your dog has been fed, is warm, safe, and has gone for a toilet break, the most ideal thing is for him to become tired. This way, your dog can sleep the whole night without making a sound.
Reasons Your Dog May Sleep Longer
Too much activity:
Too much activity or exercise for your dog can make him too tired. For instance, if you have taken him on a long walk or to the local dog park, he will take a nap as soon as he gets home as he will be very exhausted.
Boredom:
Your dog can sleep more due to boredom. This may mean that you need to spend more time playing with your dog or engaging him in activities that can keep him busy.
Getting a dog when you won’t have time for that dog is simply cruel and it’s best you do not get one. Make sure you play games with your dog. You can even teach him new commands and tricks. Once your dog has somebody to play with, your dog will be very happy.
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or Canine Diabetes:
If you notice that your puppy sleeps for longer than normal, then this could be an indication of Hypoglycaemia. Hypoglycemia simply means low blood sugar and is very common among smaller breeds like the Pomeranian.
Triggers for hypoglycemia in your dog may include:
- Stress
- Too much time between meals
Symptoms of Hypoglycaemia in your dog
- wobbly walk,
- confusion,
Treatment
- For quick treatment, simply rub honey on the gums of your dog and take him to the vet immediately for better diagnosis and further treatment
- An IV solution can be used to treat moderate to severe hypoglycemia attacks. IV solution helps to increase your dog’s sugar level to a moderate level.
The importance of seeking immediate attention cannot be overemphasized. Severe cases of sleepiness can result in a coma that is most often dangerous.

Do Pomeranians like blankets?
Many Poms enjoy the comfort of lying in a warm and soft blanket. If you have not given your Pom a soft pillow or baby blanket, then it is strongly advised that you do!
Can Pomeranians sleep on the floor?
If your Pom has a comfortable and overstuffed bed and you notice that he might not be sleeping on that bed at night and prefers sleeping on the floor.
This may be due to the fact that the bed retains excess heat during the summer and may just want to feel cool and more comfortable when sleeping at night.
In the winter, your dog may choose to sleep on the floor near a heater or in the sunshine just to receive more warmth instead of sleeping on its bed.
Can Pomeranians sleep outside?
Unlike some other breeds, Poms add toy dogs. Allowing your dog to sleep outside or considering your dog as an outdoor dog is not recommended regardless of the fact that it can handle cold and hot weather temperatures.
If you have a Pom, it is best to keep him inside your home with your family.
