Often, we hear pet owners ask, should I pet my dog while sleeping? Most pet owners love their dogs and want the best for them.
The fondness may want you to spend your bedtime with the pet. If you are a dog owner, petting your dog regularly is normal and expected.

It’s a natural habit that develops over time and it strengthens the bond between dog owners and their dogs.
Many humans and other animals do not like being touched by other individuals or species.
However, dogs are quite different in the sense that they enjoy and desire displays of affection and physical contact.
Should I pet my dog while sleeping?
Regardless, it is very important that you know when and how to make physical contact with dogs, especially when you are interacting with a dog for the first time.
Dogs are known to sleep for almost 50% of the day which is about 12-14 hours in a day.
This varies based on the age of your dog and how active your dog is along with its daily routine.
After playing the whole day, it is expected that your dog takes a very cool nap.
Surprisingly, just like humans, dogs have dreams during the REM sleep cycles.
Here are some frequently asked questions on petting dogs and some of the tips on how to pay your dog correctly and properly.
Should you wake your dog if she’s experiencing nightmare?
Dog owners are advised to leave their dogs alone according to the American Kennel Club.
The reason why this is necessary is because interrupting or disturbing your dog during REM sleep (where most of the dreams occur) can lead to serious problems.
Even human beings take seconds or even minutes to realize that it was just a dream once they wake up startled and shocked from a nightmare.
In the case of dogs, they experience the exact same thing but while dogs may not be able to calmly process that it was just a nightmare.
They may end up biting or attacking their owner unintentionally.
Do dogs like to be pet while they sleep?
One common thing about dogs is their desire for physical touch and cuddles.
Dogs enjoy getting cuddles and this provides them with warmth and also helps them bind with their owners as it releases chemicals that make them feel good.
It has been noted that dog cuddling releases a hormone known as oxytocin which is released by nursing mothers during childbirth and breastfeeding.
Oxytocin has a very calming and comforting effect.
Research has proven that about three minutes of cuddling your dog increases the level of oxytocin in both dogs and humans which makes this beneficial for both dogs and humans as well.
In the past, dogs needed to be cuddled as a means to get body heat in order to keep them warm.
With this, they kept themselves and their owners warm as well. Between puppies and their mother, cuddling is very common.
Mothers usually cuddle their puppies as a way of comforting them and also keeping them protected from preys and strangers.
Cuddling is a basic instinct at the beginning of the life of a dog.
Do dogs like being stroked when sleeping?
Once you get a dog, it is important to observe its sleeping habits and behavior. This can help you know when something is off about your dog.
The sleeping habits of your dog can tell you a lot about that dog.
Their personal habits and body language are a means of expressing themselves and their personality.
There may be several reasons why your dog suddenly starts snuggling up to you or when your dog touches you while sleeping.
Over the years, this question has been thought of so many times by many experts from canine related fields and the most common answer to it is that your dog may be trying to tell you something while it sleeps.
However, this is a personal preference and not all dogs may do this.
There are no health related problems attached to dogs snuggling up to their owners so it is best to just allow your dog to sleep.
This should not be a cause for alarm or concern. As part of their DNA, you can expect some breeds to behave differently and thus be more naturally cuddly than others.
Is it okay to pet a sleeping puppy?
According to the recent research published by the Mayo Clinic Proceedings, sharing your bedroom with your dog can improve your sleep as long as the dog is not placed under the bed covers.
Lois Krahn, M.D, a study coauthor and sleep medicine specialist at the Center for Sleep Medicine on Mayo Clinic’s Arizona Campus in a press release stated that many pet owners are away from their pets for much of the day.
And as such, allowing their pets to stay on their beds is a good way to maximize their time with them when they are home.
Hence, pet owners can find comfort knowing that it will not impact their sleep negatively.
This press release left many pet owners very confused as pet experts have advised strongly against pets sleeping with their dogs or cats for the following reasons:
- Serious illness in humans
- Poor behavior in the pet
Presently, many vets are reconsidering their previous thoughts and finally accepting the fact that these past claims were overstated or just incorrect.
Dr. Ann Hohenhaus, a staff doctor at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, who specializes in small animal internal medicine and oncology stated that the resultant behavior can negatively impact both pet parents and their four-legged friends.
She further continues to say that sleeping with your pet is an important ritual for many people and it does not need to be avoided if both pet and owner are healthy.
Behavior Issues Related to Pets Sleeping on Beds
Allowing a dog or a cat to sleep in their bed does not lead to behavioral problems.
Some aggressive animals may not be allowed to use a bed. However, this aggression is usually caused by fear, not because they are on a bed or piece of furniture.
According to Hartstein, the bigger issue is in the lifestyle of the pet owner. Certain questions should be put into consideration such as:
- Are pet owners comfortable sleeping with a pet by their feet?
- Will a cat’s decision to leave in the middle of the night disrupt the person’s sleep?
- Do they mind pet hair or fur on their furniture?
If the pet owners do not mind these little inconveniences, then the pet will definitely enjoy their bed as much as the owner.
Hartstein further states that pets love their parents and are drawn to their scents Andy that they also prefer sleeping in elevated spaces
If the pet parent does not go well with the idea of the pet sleeping on their bed, then a possible suggestion would be to install a comfortable and clean pet bed in or near their bedroom.
The pet owner can also add a piece of his/her clothing in the bed so that the pet can feel comfortable and enjoy the scent of its owner.
Can children share a bed with pets?
Many children would want to sleep with the family dog or cat just like adult pet owners.
However, it is not a good idea to allow children who are six years old and younger to sleep alone with a pet.
Children may not know how to pet or play with pets properly and may pull their tails, play roughly or neglect their needs.
Although cats and dogs may tolerate this behavior sometimes, they may become afraid of being terrorized by these children and can strike out one day.
It is better to wait until your child is mature enough and knows how to handle, pet and play with the pets before allowing them to sleep together.
