Is an American Bulldog a Pitbull?
Some of the differences between the Pitbull and the American Bulldog include:
They Have Slightly Different Coat Coloring
There are many similarities in the physical appearance of both the American Bulldog and the American Pit Bull Terrier.
For instance, they are both extremely short-haired and are usually of similar colors. However, the American Bulldogs are mostly white, and have solid patches of brown or black on different parts of their body most times.
The American Pit Bull Terrier, has a more solid color although it is not necessarily white. The American Pitbull Terrier is usually light brown or gray and sometimes they have a tuxedo coat which is of a completely different and lighter-color.
Another significant difference in their colors is that it is very common for American Bulldogs to have color patches unlike pit bulls
Is an American Bulldog considered an aggressive breed?
Undoubtedly, the American Pitbull Terrier and the American Pitbull are friendly dogs but it has been proven that the pit bulls are generally friendlier, even with strangers and acquaintances.
The case is quite different for smaller animals though as they do not interact with them very well.
In addition, American Bulldogs are known to be very large and tough dogs. These dogs can become very aggressive and violent once they are scared or restless.
The pitbulls are quite similar as they require an energy outlet. However, they are less likely to be as violent and destructive as American Bulldogs
In order to properly manage and control their energy, the Pitbull and American Bulldog require some form of care.
When it comes to children, both the Pitbull and the American Bulldogs are known to have a great sense of protection towards them but this is more on the side of Pitbulls.
American Bulldogs are also more recommended for use as watchdogs rather than Pitbulls as they are considered more fierce.
Pitbulls on the other hand are too friendly regardless of the false claims made by people.
“Pit Bull” is a term while “American Bulldog” is a breed of dog
The Pitbull is a term used to describe different breeds of dogs that have similar features or come from the same ancestry with the bulldogs and terriers.
However, “American Bulldog” is a particular breed of dog.
Examples of dog breeds that are referred to as Pitbulls include:
- the American Staffordshire,
- the American Pit Bull Terrier,
- the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and
- sometimes the American Bulldog
The term “pit bull” has even been used in England as the short form for the American Pit Bull Terrier.
With this explaination, it has become easier to differentiate a pitbull and an American bulldog.
How can you tell a pitbull from an American Bulldog?
Unlike some of the other breeds, the American bulldog is a full and pure breed of bulldog. Pitbulls is a general term used to describe some breeds of dogs such as terriers or bulldogs.
More so, “pit bull”, when used in relation to the American Pitbull Terrier can be used to refer to the genetic makeup of the American Pit Bull Terrier.
The American Pit Bull Terrier can be described as a crossbreed between the bulldog and the terrier which can be traced to the now-extinct Old English Terrier.
Although the Old English Bulldog is now extinct, it has been proven that the American Bulldog and pitbull obtained their bulldog genes from this breed.
The American Pitbull Terrier and all other breeds classified as Pit Bulls were used for the following purposes:
- Working
- Hunting
- Farming
Dogs that fall under this category were known to be very strong, tough, and have high energy to do these tasks, unlike other breeds.
In addition, they were used for illegal activities such as bull-baiting from which their name was derived.
The American Bulldog Is Larger
In terms of weight and size, Pitbulls are usually smaller. Generally, an average American Bulldog generally weighs about 60 to 120 pounds and is about 20 to 28 inches high.
On the other hand, Pit bulls, or an American Pit Bull Terrier, weigh about 35 to 60 pounds, and are about 18 to 21 inches in height
Depending on the breed and some other factors such as their feeding habit or food, American Bulldogs can grow bigger than the average height and weight.
Usually, female American Pit Bull Terriers are quite smaller than the males and they weigh about 30 to 50 pounds with a height of 17 to 20 inches.
While Pitbulls have more defined muscles and leaner bodies, American Bulldogs have a stockier build, with broader shoulders resembling a square-like appearance.
Pitbulls also have different shapes of head. Compared to the American Bulldog, the pit bulls head is more V-shaped
American Bulldogs Are Friendlier Towards Other Dogs and Cats
Although American Bulldogs do not do well with other pets and animals, they are friendlier towards them than Pitbulls.
The prey drive of American Bulldogs is quite high and it affects their interactions and relationships with smaller animals. Pitbulls, however, are not as tolerant as the American Bulldogs.
Pitbulls are very friendly towards people but this is different from other animals. In the past, pitbulls were bred for dogfighting and other illegal activities.
This created a fighting instinct, especially in the presence of smaller animals. We hope that this article will help you differentiate between the two lovely dogs.
