You can find your pitbull enjoy a nice swim during hot weather.  Before you send your pitbull in a pool, can pitbulls swim?

If you train your pitbull, it can swim. However, not every pitbull can comfortably swim.  While breeds like Labradors are natural swimmers, pitbull are not great at swimming.

Pitbulls have large heads, dense muscular frames, and relatively short legs that make them less of swimmers.

If you want your pitbull to swim, you should build confidence in them as puppies.  Otherwise, the dog may not get used to the water.

Why It’s Hard For Pitbulls to Swim

Pitbulls are not made for the water. Their physical qualities and traits make them less of a swimmer.

As such, pitbulls may find it hard to stay afloat in water. This does not mean that they cannot swim.

Pitbulls are made for the land. In the beginning, dogs were bred for different roles or purposes. This depends on the breed.

Some of the dogs were trained to become companions, guards, entertainers, and more. However, pitbulls have many roles like fighting.

Hence, pitbulls were not bred to swim. They a large head and a muscular body that makes them less swimmers.

Pitbulls have the lean muscle for bull-baiting activities. However, this body structure has remained with them.

The muscular body makes it difficult for the pitbulls to stay afloat. In other words, the body of this breed is a disadvantage in terms of water activities.

Since dogs having more fats struggle to stay afloat in water, pitbulls find it harder staying afloat.

Are Pitbulls good at swimming?

The large heads

Pitbulls have large head that make them endearing and adorable. However, the head makes them to struggle in water.

The head stays heavy on them. The head is the reason why pitbulls undergo C-section during birth.

Dogs need to keep their heads above water when they swim. The heaviness of the head drag them during swimming.

Pitbulls take more muscles and energy to keep them afloat for a long period.

Shorter legs

Pitbulls tend to have relatively short legs and a wide chest. In some cases, pitbulls’ legs are thin compared to their other parts. However, the legs are relative to breeds and individuals.

The short leg does not allow them to thrust enough to stay afloat for a long time. They end up trying after spending much energy trying to stay afloat.

Do Pitbull Like to Swim?

You should know that not all pitbulls struggle to swim. Some pitbulls are scared of entering water.The passion for water depends on individual dogs.

How to Teach Pitbulls to Swim

You can teach your pitbull to swim. However, the odds is often stacked against this breed in some situation.

While some dogs will enjoy to swim with you, others will not want to come close to water.  You can help your frightened dog to build confidence before teaching them.

You should be patient when you want to introduce the dog to water. Pitbulls can be stubborn and wilful.

This means that pitbulls can take a longer time to learn how to swim.  In addition, you have to be patient when training a pitbull.

Do Pitbulls need a life jacket to swim?

Life jackets are important when it comes to teaching pitbulls how to swim. You may notice that some pitbulls may sink if you leave them in the water.

However, with a vest, it becomes easier for them to swim. Life vests offers two things during swimming and training.

First, the dog will not sink when you put a vest on it. Second, it builds confidence in your dog during training.  The dog gets a sense of security when it swims.

We have different types of vests on the market. You should get the right vest for your dog if you want to swim without difficulty.

How do I get my Pitbull to swim?

You should early to introduce your dog to water. This would help you acclimatize to the water world.

Since water may be frightening to some pitbulls, early training can make them less scared and anxious.

You can start training them in the bathtub or small kiddie pool.  You should be careful and patient when you train them.

When the dog gets used to being in water, you can take it to swimming pool or any water body.

Are Pitbulls afraid of water?

You should take the dog often to the place to get used to the environment. Allow the dog to sniff around.

With time, the dog would get confidence and comfortable to swim. You can begin the process from the shallow end.

If the dog makes it to this stage, you have made a great progress. However, you should know that pitbulls are stubborn.

Some of them may not want to step inside the water. You should learn not to force a dog to go in.

If you force a pitbull into the water, it would make it stress out and anxious. We do not recommend such action.

Swimming with Pitbulls

When you succeed in the shallow end with your dog, the next thing is to join the dog in the water.

When you are in the water, pitbulls would likely want to join you because they are courageous.

However, we have said that you should force a dog inside the water.  Help the dog to stay in the water with words of support.

You can give them treats during training to help the dogs learn with you.  You should not show signs of worry or fear.

This breed is intelligent and can read your body language easily.  With time, you can try swimming with the dog inside waters.

Do pit mixes like to swim?

Whether pure or mixed breed, pitbulls have different behaviors.  Some pitbulls  wouldlove the water, even if they are bad swimmers.

Pitbulls enjoy wallowing in mud, wading through shallow water, and playing with sprinklers and hoses.

However, pitbulls muscular and physical build mean that they have trouble swimming and may not be able to stay afloat well.
