If you have a Border Collie, you would realize they love eating. You may say that dogs love eating because of their energetic nature. In fact, dogs eat a lot, especially my seven-month-old Border Collie.

However, do Border Collies eat a lot? I have two Border Collies on my farm, which are very heavy eaters.
Do Border Collies eat a lot?
A growing Border Collie may consume at least 1,400 calories daily because of their activities. However, adults could consume an average of 1,000 calories, and older adults eat around 700 calories daily.
If you live a sedentary lifestyle, you may not want to keep a Border Collie because of its highly active nature. This breed originally worked to herd livestock, making them companions and farm workers.
However, you can make them family pets, but they need constant physical and mental stimulation.
Caloric intake that Border Collies need
If you’re wondering how much feed you can feed your Border Collie, I have made a table to help you. The breeds expend their energy and have active metabolism.
| Young Border Collies | 1400 Cal |
| Average Adult Border Collies | 1000 Cal |
| Senior Border Collies | 700 Cal |
You should know that the calories vary among dogs. Therefore, you should know how your dog is fed before calculating.
How much food does a Border Collie eat per day?
I recommend you feed your dog 1.5 to 2 cups of high-quality dry food daily. Since this breed has trouble self-regulating their meal intake, you should split their caloric intake into two different meals.
You can decide to make these two meals, breakfast and lunch before you give dinner. The trick is controlling the amount the dog eats. You don’t have to practice free-feeding and automatic feeders.
Some pet owners give their dogs one large meal, but this can affect their Border Collies’ performance and activity.
In addition, this type of meal can cause obesity. Puppies eat more often compared to adults. Thus, you can feed your puppy at least four to six times daily and start reducing when it is six months old.
At this age, you should reduce the meals or divide the normal meals into two or three meals.
How to Feed Cooked Meat For Your Border Collie
To feed your Collie with cooked meat doesn’t mean you should not give him food left after a meal. They have a digestive system that is not like human beings. They can’t digest seasonings, herbs, spices, and some other things we humans can.
Onion and Garlic are the ingredients that are very harmful to Border Collie dogs and not just to them but also to every other dog as well.
Onions, whether cooked, boiled, sliced, or minced, have a poisonous substance known as N-propyl Disulfide. This poison damages and reduces the red blood cells, eventually leading to anemia in dogs.
Also, poultry meat has tubular bones, and when it is cooked, although it is hard, it becomes easy to break and may also tear or break into small, thin sharp pieces in your Border Collie’s mouth.
When treated to a high degree, poultry bones form a sticky substance known as gluten.
Factors to consider when choosing dog food
Before you select a dog food, you should consider some essential macronutrients that would benefit it. As a pet parent, you must ensure that you feed your Border Collie with the right meal all the time.
Borders eat a lot and still need to consume more proteins and fats.
Protein
Regarding Border Collies, you should understand that the more protein the dog eats, the better and healthier it would become. For instance, you need a formula that contains at least 25% protein, but 50% protein is the best.
With protein, the overall health and development becomes achievable because it contains essential amino acids. When this breed does not get high level of protein from meals, they can become weak or lethargy.
I recommend that you buy dog foods with at least two high-quality protein sources.
Fats
Most of us stay away from fats, but you should not deprive your dog of fats. I recommend you get the right kind of fat that can support the health of your dog’s coat and skin.
In addition, fat can provide energy to your dog and it is easier to digest. When you check the nutritional facts label of food packaging, you would discover that these dog foods contain some fat.
However, this fat should come from protein source if you want the most ideal fat for your dog. Flaxseed oils and fish are conventional, and fish meat has become a better source because of the presence of omega fatty acids.
Sometimes, you can add salmon oil for that yummy flavor if your dog is picky with food.
A full-grown Border would need at least 12% fat and 22% protein. Remember to include fruits and vegetables, as well as vitamin and mineral supplements.
In conclusion
Border Collie puppies require at least 25% protein in their meals. Furthermore, you can get this from whole meat like chicken or a boneless lamb. You can mix them, to serve your dog a generous amount of fats.
The meals should contain at least 15% fat while staying within the recommended calories based on age and weight.
