To breed your dog could be fulfilling and rewarding. But most individuals don’t breed their dogs due to a lack of understanding of pet breeding.

The Mating Process of Golden Retrievers

The mating process of Goldies depends on your female Golden – If she is willing to breed or not, if she is not ready to mate, her body language will tell you– growling, moving away, or not moving at all, etc.

To start the mating process, acquaint a male Goldie with a female one and give them time to get along with each other. They may hit it off in the first go, or the female Goldie will be reluctant.

If she is reluctant, we recommend you give them more time to blend, at the right time, your male retriever will mate with your female Goldie from behind. Some inexperienced Goldies may try mounting your female Golden from the side or by their head.

When your dogs are locked together, they stay as short as five minutes to as long as thirty minutes. It’s normal for dogs to get stuck together during breeding.

I know many pet owners panic. Relax and don’t panic or try to separate your pets. They will eventually move away from each other once they are done mating.

The Best Age to Breed a Female Golden Retriever

Your male or female dogs must be sexually mature before you breed them. The question is – when do dogs reach sexual maturity? It depends on the dog. Most female dogs reach puberty at or around the age of six months.

Small dog breeds have their first heat cycle at around four months of age. However, larger breeds, like Golden Retrievers, get to two years before their heat cycle starts and become regular. Generally, heat cycles happen two to four times a year.

The right breeding age of a dog depends on its breed. Different dog breeds have different mating ages.

The ideal age of a female Golden is from 18 months to 24 months. Female Golden Retrievers mate after they have finished their second or third heat cycle. This is usually when they are 24 months old.

These signs indicate that your female Goldie has reached the breeding age.

The Best Age to Breed a Goldie Retriever (Male)

A six-month-old male Goldie can impregnate a female Goldie. However, just because they can doesn’t mean they should. A male Goldie needs to reach the standard breeding age to consider breeding. Ideally, male Golden should mate when or after they turn two.

Healthy hips, eyes, and elbows ensure successful mating. Hip dysplasia or other illness can hinder the mating process, therefore breeders should take note of this information.

Signs That It’s Time to Breed Male Goldens

The following are some of the major signs to look for when you’re considering breeding your male Golden Retrievers:

Your Goldie may mount other dogs.
Your Goldie may appear clingy or anxious.
Urinating frequently.
Licking the genital area.
Attracted toward female Goldies.

My take on breeding a dog

Golden Retrievers often start their first cycle of heat between ages of 10-14 months old. During this period, you can expect her to be in heat about every six months and last about 2-3 weeks.

However, ensure that you monitor the first cycle began because the timing should be regular for the second cycle.

I didn’t know how long does my golden retriever in heat will bleed. I spoke to my vet and she said I have to observe that her vulva is large, red, or swollen with some bleeding or blood-tinted discharge.

I noticed that my dog only bleed for around half of the total cycle, which is usually 7 to 10 days. Finally, Golden retrievers should not be fixed before six months of age.

My vet recommended that I have to wait until she was at least a year old. However, many vets are now also recommending not to spay female golden retrievers at all unless it is absolutely necessary.
